Summary

—Our Vision : We envision a historic slope that preserves it’s distinctive glamour and encourages harmonious growth; where unique shops, services and cultural attractions attract the youth to live, work and create in the community of al weibdeh in a safe,  friendly,  and walkable environment.

—Historic areas should build on its existing assets to distinguish itself from any other newly made areas. The Amman municipality has already conducted an inventory of existing properties that should be protected as historic landmarks for the area, it’s important to note that these properties should be considered the cornerstone for future development within the Historic area of Jabal al Weibdeh .

—The distinctive glamour of the Historic slope establishes its identity , the slope’s character is created through multiple stairs that have different atmospheres from public commercial stairs that are full of art to stairs that simply lead you to the upper level with access points to the bordering buildings ( residential , commercial and cultural ) and improving these stairs can make an area feel more welcoming and unique.

Ensuring Harmonious growth is important to the success of the area. The Historic slope should focus on smaller scale development, such as boutique shops and independently owned restaurants. As redevelopment occurs, it will be important to ensure the scale, quality, and type of structures that are built are compatible with existing historic structures.

—A vibrant mix of uses creates a destination for the youth and unique options for residents. The slope can maintain its small-town appeal and focus on its role within the Weibdeh by encouraging local businesses, such as Bet Sitti cafe, Yafa for herbal drinks, and Rashid’s furniture. Including a variety of housing types within the area that increases activity and helps to support the retail component. Cultural attractions, such as a Darat Al-Funun, Dar Al-Anda, and Jadal for knowledge and culture, generates a purpose for trips to the area.

—Live and work or mixed use areas combine residential and non-residential uses, and can be either vertical (typically retail on the ground level and residential or office above) or horizontal (single uses adjacent to each other). Providing the opportunity to live and work in the same area creates housing variety and stimulates activity on the streets.
